already have haynes manual by the way, but just looking for some more instructions so i have more to go by.
if you have to ask , my advice is take it to a garage or you could end up with an expensive repair bill

not being funny insulting or demeaning , just trying to advice for the best !

as wrongly adjusted timing can cause issues with the engine's running and lead you to a none active vehicle.

thanks for your advice, i know what ya mean and ive been tempted to do that but i would like to learn how to do it myself. i'm doing a motor vehicle engineering course at college so it would seem silly to get someone else to do it when i will have to learn to do it at some point anyway. i'm determined to get the car to its full potential on my own if you know what i mean. lol :)
Thanx anyway.
hmmm with this extra info maybe a suggestion of talking to your tutor and having them advice you " being on scene so to speak " they could walk you through this . and having trained " ear " would know if you set it correctly.

if your talking the main timing and not the elctronic timing then you will need to be looking towards the timing belt and the bottom pully for the markings which will be in your manuel. " be warned getting this wrong will cause valve damage at the very least "
i assume a ZX is an all electronic ignition vehicle, in which case there is no real adjustment of it, in the old days it was done by rotating the distributor, modern engines are controled by sensors which are not adjustable. The electronics automaticaly adjust the timing of the engine for optimum running, there is a way of bypassing all this which is what the tuning guys do by remapping the ECU with a laptop and the correct software , a whole new ball game...not really worth the effort on a 94 ZX
