Hi everyone,
I have a Vauxhall Corsa 98 plate, and when I brake, there seems to be quite a loud ''grinding'' noise coming from the back brakes, kind of like a ''grinding/thunder'' noise. But its only when I brake.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this might be?

Regards Pete

Sounds to me as if the shoes need inspecting/replacing (assuming it has drum brakes at the back).

Yes Mustardmit, it does have drums at the back.
take it to a garage possibly pads, dont leave it too long because once they are worn down it starts wearing through metal and can be expensive job
If it is your brake shoes, which it sounds very much like it is, the shoes will be down to the rivets and it will score the drum, I had to replace the drums on a car once as it had been continually driven with the pads worn down to the rivets and they had massive grooves in them which were impossible to smooth down. The worst scenario is that the spring may have broken which holds the shoes in, and this would cause the brakes to grind, but I would assume that it would bemore of a jerk on the brakes when they are applied. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the sooner that the brake shoes are replaced the better and safer for you. John
My son had the same problem with his Audi A3. He was told at the garage that a lot of people had the same grinding from the brakes and it was down to build up of salt from the roads. There was nothing actually wrong with the discs or pads.
Have you been HANDBRAKE turning? 98 I would not think that the rear brake needs replacing on this year, has the car been stood up? if the car has & previously been used in the snow/ ice weather, the lining will be rusty and grating on the drum, try running the car with the handbrake up 2 >> 3 clicks to clear the rust, How many Clicks does the handbrake pull up? If it 1 >2 >3 that should tell you if the linings are down.
Rivets on brake shoes? aint seen them in years & i have 2 corsas - probably newer ones tho, how about the shoes/linings becoming unstuck & rattling inside the drum, keep us posted
same thing has happened to my vauxhall meriva, i think vauxhalls are one to have this problem, the snow has ruined to brakes
