If your MOT certificate says it has run out then I take it that is the case and you could be prosecuted for driving a car with no MOT.
If this garage has written you a letter, then take your car as soon as possible and get a new MOT on it.. provided the date shown is earlier than the day you got stopped, or the date the previous mot ran out is after you got stopped and written on the new mot certificate, then you should get away with it.
