Filling Stations

I have recently visited 3 filling stations that have large, new signs threatening dire consequences if you fill up "on the wrong side" - i.e. your filler is on the driver's left, but you park with the pump on your right, and stretch the pipe across the car.

Anyone know why?

Perhaps the hoses are only 2 feet long?
my local filling station is exactly the opposite, it has extra long pipes and the signs say use both sides of the pump.
You'll look a berk if your hose is too short to reach your filly uppy hole?

The hoses are long enough.
Power trip?
Ask them why....
maybe the manager is an old boiler who likes to hand out b0llockings?
Question Author
I did ask - in all 3 cases - they had no idea - looked at me as if I was insane.
are they all the same brand?
Question Author
Not sure - the first was definitely BP.
just ignore it, what are they going to do? Bar you? reminds me of those tw&t that think a phone is going to blow the place up! I don't mind that what annoys me is those ar5h0les who insist on entering a garage from the worng end. If they are really that bothered use shorter pipes. Probably the local jobsworth manager!
Maybe they are guarding against this sort of thing:

perhaps in the compenastion claim culture we now live in there have been claims for bodywork/paintwork/aerial/spoiler etc. damage due to dragging the hose accross the roof/tailgate...just a thought..

Pretty certain that Chas2008 is right

mdo - can't remember exactly where - was out and about in places I don't know and am not likely to visit again - a BP station near Doncaster - a filling station between Oldbury/Dudley, and another one in Solihull.
Question Author
A mate of mine has just suggested it might be because the auto cut-off doesn't work if the pump nozzle is inverted (which is likely if stretched across the car).

I would advise motorists to remember which side the filler up is on. It is always on the right in a Vauxhall, if that is of any help.
