About to sell our second car but, being a true Scotsman, don't want to include the whole 3/4 of a tank of petrol it currently holds. How would I take out 2 thirds of it leaving enough for the buyer to get home. The car is only going for 60 so with the extra petrol, the guy is getting an extra 15% free!

Thought about adding the cost of the petrol to the price......but is that too tight?

.......or am I just being petty?

60 motor with 3/4 tank of petrol? Get it out I say. Take a suitably large container with a sealable lid for afterwards, and a length of hose. Place the hose down into the tank and suck on the other end until you detect petrol. Spit if neccesary! Now the atmospheric pressure will be greater than that in the hose, and the petrol will rise. Siphon off into your container to use later.

cheers for the info..........can see what he says about the petrol first, if he is willing to give me the money for it, it will save me a mouthful of petrol.
Greenbhoy - if you're going to do it mate, do it before your buyer gets there. You can't negotiate, and then say "Right, I'm getting my hose then!" - that really will make you look tight!!

phoning him before he comes round so will ask him then.......then I'll get the bairn to suck on the hose so she gets the mouthful of petrol.

Cheers again.

Ummm... don't suck any gas.  That stuff can kill you!  Here's how... first, make sure you have a sufficient length of hose. That usually means six feet or so. Use 3/8 inch clear plastic tubing so you can see what's happening. Push the hose into the gas tank until it is below the surface of the gas in the tank.  Make sure the end is under the surface by blowing into the hose and listening for a bubbling noise in the tank.

Now, make a long loop of hose such that it goes clear down to the ground and comes back up to a point well above the fuel level in the tank. If you have to stand on a chair to get sufficiently above the gas level, do it! Now suck! Watch as the gas comes up into the hose and starts to flow down the loop towards the ground. It will then start to fill the hose until the gas in the hose reaches the level of the gas in the tank. If you keep the free end of the hose high enough nothing will ever come out. If you stick the free end into a can and lower the free end and the can towards the ground you will see gas flowing into the can. When you feel that you have siphoned enough gas simply raise the hose and the can above the level of the gas in the tank and the gas will stop flowing. If you leave the hose in the can, submerged below the surface, gas will start to flow back into the gas tank of the car!

When you are finished, just lift the free end of the hose way up high and let the hose empty back into the car tank, yank it out of the tank and voila...

Or you could just suck it.

....or just get my wife/daughter to suck the hose.

Speaking as Another true Scotsman , I alos agree, get that petrol out of there, and leave him as little as possible, hes too mean to spend a wad on a car, so he can buy hois own petrol, as long as he has enough to get hi rond the corner, F^%$ him, LOL.

You will need a thin but fairly firm tube, as most modern cars, have anti syphon baffles in the filler neck, so it has to pass threough this to get to that precious liquid, failing this just punch a hole in the tank about 2 inches form the bottom and jack up  the other side, til you got what you want
