Can someone tell me what legalities are involved in running a non-profit making social club. I would like to start an old car club to do 6 or 7 runs each year. Do I need to have a committee with elected officers. Or can I run it myself with the help of someone to do administration . There would be a small membership fee £15 pa and a bank account with two signatories. I really want to know if it is necessary to have elected officers eg Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer.

we started off with just two of us and not even a bank account, however, we now have officers/committee members, simply because it shares the hard work around. Nobody can accuse me of using their money for nefarious purposes, because we have a treasurer who takes care of the money, deals with the inevitable bills (eg insurance, rent etc) and provides a report. I am very thankful i don't have to do it. Although we have a committee, i am still chairman meaning i get to set the direction, and veto things but also means i get other people's ideas (and again, hard work)
We have a constitution so that there is no doubt about how people are expected to behave. We also had to get a risk assessment and H+S policy because somone broke their leg accidentally and was considering suing us
