Why is petrol and diesel sold by the 0.9p per litre and why if the VAT went up by 2.5% did the price not just go up by 2.5% of yesterdays price?

It went up less than the rise round here. It was 121 and is now 123.
Where are you squarebear?? It's at least 125 around here!
Yorkshire
Ah; too far for me to go then just to get cheaper petrol!
The 0.9p is convention. Only part of the price is VAT and that's the part that was increased.

It is. VAT is charged on the total of fuel price plus duty
diesel £131.9- £132.9 North Devon RIPPPPP OFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you do the maths, you will see that a 2.5% increase in VAT equates to a 2.1% increase on yesterday's prices. (though this does nothing to answer your question, sorry)
I think I should get you done under the Trade Descriptions Act Bubba, with that avatar.
