problems viewing recorded DVDs

I just purchased a DVD recorder and recorded a movie, but it cannot be viewed by another DVD player. This is the first time I do this; the movie can only be played in the DVD in which it was recorded....

When i burnt a film onto my DVD-R disc, when i played it on my DVD Player it was in Widescreen. Can i change this setting?

I often receive files called "unknown.unk". Can anyone enlighten me as to how you play them. When I open them I cannot seem to get anywhere. Your help would be greatly appreciated
