Getting movies onto disc?

I've downloaded some movies and i'm having a hell of a time geting them onto disc. I've tried nero, dvd shrink, prism window media player and many more. I'm new to this and just need them taking from my hard drive and putting onto a dvd asap because i'm running low on disc space. A walkthrough on how to do this would be really appreciated.

windows xp?
do you have a dvd burner?
If the answers to these are yes yes then whack in an empty dvd, go to MyComputer, open the dvd drive and drag the movie files into the open dvd folder. click on file and select write these files to dvd.
