Does the DVD use the same sound card as the CD ?

My CD sound is fine but on DVD I get crackling and bubbly speech. This is the same for WMP,DivX or VLC (the latest one). The transfer mode is RMA in Device 0 and 1.
My sound card is C-Media AC97. Would it improve things if I downloaded a new one from Cnet.
Or do I have to buy a new DVD.
I have been playing about with this for weeks, please help, thanks

Yes

A sound card is a physical device - you can't download one from the net, any more than you can download a new car from the net.

You don't make it clear whether you have a DVD drive that works OK when playing CDs, but not DVDs, or whether you have separate DVD and CD drives.
If the latter, then the problem is probably with the lead that connects your DVD drive.

Hallo rojash, sorry if I got the name wrong, only bear with me, I grew up with wind-up gramophones. It seems to be called 'audio device-driver' I have since read a forum on Cnet where others have had a problem loading the exact driver and they have gone back to their old one. Although I did see I think in device manager you could update the driver from there but maybe not even then, as my computer was made up in a shop and not a known brand.
Your second query, yes I have a CD player separate to the DVD
A CD sounds just as good on the DVD using the 3 above programmes, but try a DVD and it is crackly and very distorted bubbly sound. If it 's possible the DVD player recognises a CD for what it is and reroutes it to the CD player, then I guess it's a new one. The most I could be capable of is pulling the ribbon cable out and putting it back again. I have been a while getting back because the Answerbank doesnt seem to Email me anymore that I have a message. Thanks for your help

If teh DVD drive plays CDs OK, then there is nothing wrong with the sound card (or driver), and probably nothing wrong with the DVD drive. The chances are that you don't have a suitable codec (to decode the DVD information).

Try downloading and installing the K-Lite codec pack.

^ go for the standard pack, basic hasn't got the codecs required and the full pack is overkill.

Hmmm... VLC contains all the codecs you will require. My general rule that I use is that if VLC wont play a file then dump the file!
DVDs play in a different way to CDs, personally I would immediately go for a replacement drive, as if CDs play OK then there is no problem with the sound card or it's driver. Try to borrow one or even if you have to purchase a repacement a DVD Reader/Writer is under £20!

Hi rojash and chuck, I downloaded the K-site but for me things are never simple because when I ran it I am presented with 3 columns of boxes(possibly a dozen or more in each) The left was Video and it was filled right up so I clicked at the bottom the next was Audio I clicked that and that filled up, I didnt like the 3rd column so I left that all empty. The next page I had to choose between Win.M.P. and Windows Classic so I chose classic. (as I already have codec 3.3.9) When loaded I tried a dvd but the same crackles and bubbly speech. Thanks for all your help.
But I think I had best look for a new unit.

Hi Athelstan, Thanks for your advice. My Speccy tells me I have SIS Mirage Graphics
6.14.10.3830 which is 2007 vintage. I cant understand exactly when you say 'go for a replacement drive' then say 'if CDs play there is nothing wrong with your driver'.
Where I live there is no chance of borrowing or calling in a Techie. I have an old Viglen but I am afraid it just has a CD player. Thanks all,... Almendros
