Suggestions for hymns please.
36 Answers
Mum just asked what hymns we should have at my Nan's service and we both agreed that we don't want past choices, namely The Lord Is My Shepherd and Jerusalem.
We would like two bright and uplifting hymns - all suggestions much appreciated.
Also, could anyone suggest a nice song to play at the end? She loved music by Sinatra, Dean Martin, Andy Williams et al.
Many thank, and huge thanks to everyone for the kind messages in B&S.

This is a modern one which I love - very uplifting. If you google it, you'll get the video. Sorry I'm an illiterate when it comes to computers so can't post the link.

There Is A Higher Throne lyrics
There is a higher throne
Than all this world has known,
Where faithful ones from ev'ry tongue
Will one day come.
Before the Son we'll stand,
Made faultless through the Lamb;
Believing hearts find promised grace—
Salvation comes.
Hear heaven's voices sing;
Their thund'rous anthem rings
Through em'rald courts and sapphire skies.
Their praises rise.
All glory, wisdom, pow'r,
Strength, thanks, and honor are
To God our King, who reigns on high
Forevermore.
And there we'll find our home,
Our life before the throne;
We'll honor Him in perfect song
Where we belong.
He'll wipe each tear-stained eye
As thirst and hunger die.
The Lamb becomes our Shepherd King;
We'll reign with Him.

IN CHRIST ALONE
In Christ alone my heart is found
He is my light, my strength, my song:
This corner stone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter,my All in All,
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
In Christ alone! - Who took on flesh,
Fulness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save:
Till on the cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied -
For every sin on him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.
There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine -
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I stand!
In Christ alone my heart is found
He is my light, my strength, my song:
This corner stone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.

NoM - firstly my very sincere condolences to you and your family on the loss of your nan.
I've got my trusty chapel hymn book at the ready, one I think is nice is "Love divine all love's excelling - I'll have to find the more uplifting tune though rather than what I call the "funeral dirge".
What about something like "Guide me o thou great redeemer"? Or something like "All things bright and beautiful" (although personally, I think that goes on a bit).
If you choose something most of the congregration will know, that is always much better. Try to get something without too many high notes either. That sounds terrible with an ordinary congregation.

NoM. Lovely suggestions here. Remember, the congregation doesn`t have to sing unless that is what you all want. I chose songs that meant a lot to OH and I for sentimental or funny reasons. We all sat and listened with our own memories, often smiling at how apt certain words or images were. Thinking of you.x
