I think there is more than one version.
Maggs22 has already asked for these and they have been answered.
Yes, Plautus. The first line of the carol was usually sung "See, amid the winter snow". Some have changed this to "See, in yonder manger low" as (a) we do not know in what season Jesus was born and (b) there is rarely snow around Bethlehem at any time of year.
