Has anyone ever listened to a song for a few years then seen the lyrics and realised what they thought was being sung was completely different and funny?
The very word for this - "mondegreen" - apparently comes from an early instance of it, where the Scots lament "They hae slain the Earl o' Moray, and laid him on the green" was rendered "... and Lady Mondegreen" by someone laughably ignorant of the details of this incident in Scots history.
I used to think that in 'You Are Not Alone' Michael Jackson was singing "Your burdens I will bear" until Peter Kay pointed out it was "your burgers are the best"
One of the Moody Blues songs I liked is called Dear Diary.
I always used to think that it was "Dead Ivy", until years later when I read the actual record cover.
