I have been trying to find out the title and singers of a song for many years. Posting the few lyrics that I know on various sites has never given me an answer.
I have now found a clip on youtube where the song is being played, so am hoping someone may recognise it from that.
The clip is from the 1983 series ‘Widows’ (which is where I first heard it) but I have also heard it played on 2 Australian shows from the same era.
In the clip the character Bella, is auditioning in a strip club - but it’s OK, you don’t see any nudity!
The scene runs from 8.13 to 8.47.
Thanks.

I suspect it was written as a short original piece for the Widows soundtrack by Stanley Myers - it doesn't sound like anything which would stand on its own out of context. Clearly it borrows from rock/R&B standards of the age, which is why you may have heard similar on Australian TV - or it's possible Myers worked on those soundtracks too - check http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004368/

Myers is of course best known for 'Cavatina' from the Deer Hunter:

Thank you for your answer, icynorth.
I haven’t had the chance to research your suggestion further, but a quick look at the link to imdb shows Stanley Myers writing for ‘Widows 2’. This particular song was in the original ‘Widows’. Presumably not called “Widows 1’ as they didn’t know how popular it would be, and another series wasn’t always part of the plan.

Having said that, when I have heard it on the Australian shows (twice on one show, but many episodes apart), they have played exactly the same lines as per ‘Widows’, so your idea that it may have been written as a soundtrack is probably a good one.
Never likely to make it to my ipod, then!
If the object is to fill your ipod with similar music, then I'm sure we can get a few suggestions from the good folks at Answerbank for some 'bar-room rock n roll' :-)

I know that one dannyk13, hear it every couple of years when the ‘Widows’ DVDs get an airing. Not overly keen, though.
And icynorth, my ipod is pretty full as it is. Everything from Classical to Country! I think that because I like the sound of this mystery song, it has become a bit of an obsession!
What about 'What is life to me without you" sung by Kathleen Ferrier?
Correction 'What is life to me without thee'
Forgot to say earlier - Myers is certainly responsible for this soundtrack - he's in the end credits.
