I have noticed that the current "trend" in music is for men to be singing in falsetto about how much they love their girlfriends. Maroon 5, james Blunt, and another one I saw on MTV just now.

I personally think that songs were never stronger than in the 60s.

What sort of music would you LOVE to hear back in the charts? What would you actually go out and buy? What should new bands be aiming to sound like?

I wonder if we can control the "trends" ourselves...!

I agree with 60s music but also like some of todays, if we went back to purely 60s music there'd be none of the decent bands and singers that are around now, some people get so much criticism when they really don't deserve it. It really annoys me when people don't like a band/singer just because they don't write their own songs. They don't have to be able to write lyrics to have a brilliant singing voice.

I think the essence of pop music is that it constantly moves forward. The 'golden' age of the sixties was only the sound of youth moving on from the croonathons their parents loved, and finding their own sounds to bond with, and enjoy. It has always been this way, although today the 'youngsters' of yesterday are the record company MD's of today, so at least they have an understanding of the pleasure and passion that their output can attract.

I don't think you can ever go back - except as a kitch 'tribute' style - music must always evolve and move on so, much as I adore sixties pop, it was, and is, of it't time and place, and belongs there and then, not here and now.

Yes Andy, I don't mean we shuld go back... but I do think that the calibre of songs were better then. Well-written, great harmonies, interesting chordally, still used orchestral instruments... What I am saying is that I wish that it was acceptable for today's somgwriters to write truly great songs, LIKE they did in the 60s, and for them to get in the charts now. I don't think they would... I think they would be considered too "cheesy"!

I totally and wholeheartedly agree with you scarlet. Andy, your comment about 60's music being of the time and not belonging in the hear and now is not quite true. All great music from beethoven to sixties pop and beyond is timeless and is being played and will always be played by young and old alike, even in a thousand years time. Although i agree that music has to move forward. After all, that is the one challenge The Beatles and other creative genius from those times set for Pop music.

As a young person in America, I would personally love for the type of music made in the 60's to come back. What's most popular today is Hip Hop and R&B and although those types of music are great in there own way when it comes to dancing to it everything comes back to "bump n' grind". No one can just dance and enjoy a song anymore. Someone always has to be rubbing against someone else. I wish that the type of music made in the 60's would come back so that everyone can just dance (with a partner or not), enjoy the song, and have a good time.
