I know they must cost a bit to make, but can anyone remember saving your Paper Round money or Pocket Money to buy the latest Madness album? They weren't that expensive, were they??

before vinyl I think it was shellac, which was thicker and less flexible but easier to break. Usually played at 78rpm;

Yes, thanks jno I remember them being referred to as 78's ☺
When I was about 7 years old my dad bought our first record player at Christmas. We didn't have a load of money so we only could afford one record. A 45 by Lonnie Donegan. Cumberland Gap and Last Train to San Fernando. My sister and I played that for weeks from breakfast to bedtime until we could afford another record. It was an EP with Ballin the Jack and 'Rings on my fingers and bells on my toes. Elephants to ride upon my little Irish Rose.'
Later on in life I attended a burglary at a recording studio in Paddington. The Boss/keyholder gave me a bag of unwanted Promotion Copies Louis Louie and Haunted Castle( Original Kingsmen), I'm walking backwards for Christmas,Jet Plane, Harbour Lights and many more. Still got them. Somehow a 78 was mixed up in the bag. Frank Sinatra, Tender Trap. Never play them now but still keep hold of them.
