Why do we get earworms.?

Dunno, but I had an earworm when I woke up in the middle of the night. Since I can't recall what now, and you posting this has made that an irritation, I'm torn between trying to recall it for the rest of the day, or trying like heck not to think of it.

The famous English mountain climber Don whillans, told us when he and Chris Bonington, made the world's first ascent of the difficult Torres del Paine mountain in Patagonia, he did it with "There's a Brown Girl in the Ring" constantly in his head, (not a lot of people know that)
