i always think of WW1 primarily in these remembrance services, don't know why, perhaps it's the sheer scale of the slaughter, even though WW2 was worse in terms of casualties. I am not a religious person but will stay a while later today and think about the sacrifices and say a little prayer for the fallen.
// perhaps it's the sheer scale of the slaughter,//
I think it is a remainder of the post war (WWII) years
the one thing that came out of discussion of the previous war was the scale of the slaughter - needless and wasteful
and what wd happen the next time? - (*)
(but dont worry folks History is being re written by such as Sir Max Hastings as the slaughter WAS necessary_
(*) war with russia was regarded as an absolute certainty - and american ( occupation ) forces in Europe ensured a start NOT in the american mainlain - possibly with invasion through Newfoundland
// with the going down of the sun, we will remember them. poignant words.//

who surrprisingly was a professor of certamics and fine art and spent a lot of time in America
I watched the service from Westminster Abbey, for the honouring of the Unknown Warrior the 100 anniversary, and the rest of the service which was moving.
