I've heard it said, "if you can remember the 60s, you weren't there"
So where the hell was I ?
I remember the first time I heard a Massive Attack song and thinking, wow!
This reminds me of a young barmaid saying to me in the 90s that she didn't enjoy her music and that it all seemed a lot better in the previous decades. I told her that we didn't appreciate all the music we had, and that in the years to come she would look back and really enjoy the music of her time.
Turns out I was wrong and she was right, it was crap.
Yes, Tiggs, it does contain the sample from the Theme from Harry's Game by Clannad.

The artist is listed as Chicane feat. Maire Brennan, but I think most sites just list Chicane.
I loved that song and also Enya's The Celts. Very atmospheric.
Great list, stickybottle. I've always found most pop music instantly forgettable. Some great music in the 90s, but only inoffensive bland dirge usually made it on ToTP or into the charts.
We did the same. 89 to 93 was a musical desert. Bloody Stock Aitkin and Waterman’s fault. Utter garbage.
Andy //the result has been that from the late 1980's and certainly into the '90's and to the present day, pop music has a built-in anonymity and obsolescence that was simply not the case in earlier times.//

Was it really not? Surely there would be as many forgotten and obsolete music from earlier decades? But the further time moves on, the more only the best are still remembered.
The 80s had the best music.
^ Appetite for Destruction etc. 60s music is very basic tbf.
70s and early 80s for me. Late 80s SAW era was pants.
I wouldn’t call 6 of 9 by Hendrix basic.
some good and bad in all era's mostly as andy says though 80 90's pump out any old forgettable dross, saying that there was some k@ap in the 70's song called shannon and seasons in the sun.. i find both cringe worthy, but really if you dig into it, there were good in all the decades and pending what radio station you listened to at the time, also a lot of missed greats deliberate or otherwise was john martyn
I liked shannon., the one about a dog swept to see. But otherwise agree with fender. A could do a great playlist from every decade 1950s to 2010s. From 90s britpop, stone Rose's especially, trance, early rap snoop dog eminem dre plus rock green day, creed, sum42
The 90s were great. I wasn’t really buying chart stuff.
Remember ... the BBC stopped showcasing anything that was appealing musically in the early 70s. Watching tot plops after then wasn't, and still isn't a good way to judge the output of anyone that hadn't "passed" their unannounced woke agenda.
70;s for me too 237... i wasnt into glam rock but Motown, Funk Disco, and so much more.

Zacs Master
I said generally. As usual, jim, you pick on one tiny aspect of someone’s post and blow it out of all proportion.

Haven't you just done similar to Pixie's post, Zacs?
1990 TOTP is going to be awful on the whole, but there's certainly the start of a renaissance of sorts for decent music. The Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets and The Stone Roses were heading up the next wave of British independent music, Nirvana were about to drop Nevermind, Blur's debut album was only a few months away, and more commercial bands like The Lightnings Seeds, Crowded House and Beautiful South were hitting their peak. It might've been a bit desolate in the Summer of 1990, but things were about to get more interesting.
