Thank you to those who picked me up on Ding-a-ling ban - my memory failed me - apparently Mary Whitehouse tried to get it banned but failed. That's the controversy I remembered.

she never troubled the charts (at least not in the UK), but for a series of truly terrible cover versions, google Mrs Elva Miller. her rendition of the Mamas and Papas "Monday Monday" was, um, special.
It was awful when it came out, and over the years it has got to the point where it offends my ears and makes me slightly angry at its awfulness.
There’s a great documentary with Paul Weller and the interviewer asks him why he looked unhappy during the recording, and his answer was “because it was a dreadful song.”
