Oldies No Longer Acceptable
While drinking a coffee in our local café this morning, it struck me how inapproate the lyrics of the old pop song being played are in today's social climate.
The number from the early Sixties by Susan Maughan (now 85!) was Bobby's Girl - here's the last two lines of the chorus.
If I was Bobby's girl
What a faithful, thankful girl I'd be
Let's have some more currently inappropriate lyrics from that era......

When the weather's fine, you got women
You got women on your mind
Have a drink, have a drive, go out and see what you can find
If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal
If her daddy's poor, just do what you feel
Speed along the lane, do a ton or a ton and twenty-five
When the sun goes down, you can make it
Make it good in a lay-by
sandyRoe - beat me to it!
Sometimes it's hard to be a woman
Givin' all your love to just one man
You'll have the bad times
And he'll have the good times
Doing things that you don't understand
But if you love him, you'll forgive him
Even though he's hard to understand, mm, mm
And if you love him, oh, be proud of him
'Cause after all, he's just a man
Very old one by Mel Torme. Sounds like the guy was a right chauvenist!
In our mountain greenery
Where God paints the scenery
Just two crazy people together
While you love your lover, let
Blue skies be your coverlet
When it rains, we'll laugh at the weather
And if you're good
I'll search for wood
So you can cook
While I stand looking
Beans could get no keener reception
in a beanery
Bless our mountain greenery home!
Lou Christie's Northern Soul gem, 'Lightnin' Strikes' -
Listen to me, baby, you gotta understand (ma-me-aah, ooh)
You're old enough to know the makings of a man (ma-me-aah, ooh)
Listen to me, baby, it's hard to settle down (ma-me-aah, ooh)
Am I asking too much for you to stick around (ma-me-aah, ooh)
Every boy wants a girl
He can trust to the very end
Baby, that's you
Won't you wait but 'til then?
When I see lips beggin' to be kissed (stop)
I can't stop (stop) I can't stop myself (stop, stop)
Lightning is striking again
Lightning is striking again
Nature's takin' over my one-track mind (ma-me-aah, ooh)
Believe it or not, you're in my heart all the time (ma-me-aah, ooh)
All the girls are sayin' that you'll end up a fool (ma-me-aah, ooh)
For the time being, baby, live by my rules (ma-me-aah, ooh)
When I settle down
I want one baby on my mind
Forgive and forget
And I'll make up for all lost time
If she's put together fine and she's readin' my mind (stop)
I can't stop (stop) I can't stop myself (stop, stop)
Lightning is striking again
Lightning is striking again and again and again and again
Lightning is striking again
Lightning is striking again
There's a chapel in the pines
Waiting for us around the bend
Picture in your mind
Love forever, but 'til then
If she gives me a sign that she wants to make time (stop)
I can't stop (stop) I can't stop myself (stop, stop)
Lightning is striking again
Lightning is striking again and again and again and again
Lightning is striking again and again and again and again
