If you listen to The Ballad Of John and Yoko which, although credited to The Beatles is actually just John and Paul. George was away in India, and Ringo was filming The Magic Christian, so the other two knocked out this supherb piece of rock and roll kitsch, with Lennon playing all guitars and singing, and Macca handling bass and drums - rather well.

Re. Goldspot's observation, this is not a 'rumour', but an actual quote from Ringo who memorably said "I'm not the best drummer in the world ... I'm not even the best drummer in The Beatles ...." which was typical of the self-depricating style that Ringo adopted as his public personna.

The fact is. Ringo was perfect in terms of ability and temprement, which are equally important in any band hoping to have a future.
