Suggest two very different uses for distortion effects

1) To make a deep bass sound seem much rounder, e.g. a bass drum for a techno track or the bassline for a jungle track. 2) To make something sound as though it was badly recorded or recorded using cheap equipment, e.g. a vocal for a "lo-fi" sounding track. In my mind, these two are pretty much opposites, since one adds to the sound and the other detracts from it.
