Ok, the affordable yet decent brands include Mission, Kef, B&W. You didn't state how much you had to spend, but just a couple of points to be aware of.
1) You can buy a cheap pair of floorstanders or a better pair of stand mounting (or shelf) speakers for the same money, as in the floorstanders, the money has been spent of the extra wood, rather than a better drive unit.
2) Unless you area a hi-fi geek and are spending 1000+ , don't worry about making your cables the same length. It's a fallacy (this from an ex-hi-fi salesman).
3) Be aware that speakers are the link between the music and the room, so don't expect a pair of big floorstanders to sound tight in a small room. Select a speaker to match the size of room you have. (I use B&W DM601 standmounters in a room 15' x 13' and they are tight and deep )
4) Buy a copy of 'What Hi-Fi Sound & Vision" from WHSmith and browse the listings in the back to see what's around and relative costs.
5) Have a look on E-Bay and see what's in your area using an advanced search (to save expensive postage) and see if you can pick up a bargain..
Good luck, if you post any more queries, I'll try to help.
Chris.
