What is the rule on how to get onto Eurovision? My mate thinks it's impossible for a big band like U2 to do Eurovision as they are already famous. He says that only armatures are allowed entry. I'm not sure I agree as when do you become a professional singer...... Weren't Abba pretty big when they won it? Sorry this is actually 3 questions.... Thanks everyone.

The artists singing each countries entry are selected by that countries organisers. The UK's organiser is the BBC. There are no rules about amateur or professional artists. Many artists have been pro when they have sung in the "Song for Europe" competition. If you want to see the rules of entry for this contest check this link http://www.ebu.ch/departments/television/pdf/ESC20

Eurovision is not solely for armatures, or indeed amateurs. Not sure of the actual selection process beyond, 'A song dor Europe'. Cliff Richard, Lulu and Katrina and the Waves had all had hits prior to taking part. I think the reason you don't see many professionals doing it, is that it's career suicide if you don't win. Hence, I am deeply hopeful that faux-lesbian duo Tatu will score 'nil points' whilst representing Russia in this years competition.

hahaha, Brilliant Darth Vader. I had such pleasure in telling my mate he was wrong! :) Thanks everyone!
btw ABBA weren't big at the time in fact we'd (the UK that is) never heard of them - Waterloo was their breakthrough into the UK market, though they went on to be a success. Sir Clifford of Richard, on the other hand was a big time dude before he did "Congratulations" - and depending on your point of view so was "ah little scouse lass" Sonia. Other famous "dudes" not mentioned yet include Billy Idol, Celine Dion (bonjour la classe), Brotherhood of man, Lulu, Sandie Shaw, and Gigliola Cinquetti of Italy. (OK i lied about the last one). Anyway here's a link to a load of trivia, news and other bollox about the most hated but most watched program of all time. Cheers, Darth Vader http://www.eurovisiondatabase.co.uk/
tatu were pretty well known, think they're classed as professional, these days a lesbian snog can get you in anywhere tho, i dont think u2 will pass off as lesbians
