iPod shuffle

I'm not too familiar with iTunes or the 'shuffle', but managing so far (just) The problem I'm having is that when I plug the shuffle into my computer, it seems to wipe all the tracks off (with iTunes open, of course). How do I just see whats on it without losing everything?

If you click on your shuffle in the pane on the left hand side, it should show a little graphic of your shuffle, and its version number. In that screen somewhere should be a box you can tick to "manually manage iPod".
