I remember Paul Simon saying he went to a party and told the host his name was Paul.

But all evening she called him Al.

That is where the title came from, but have not seen the lyrics so not sure if they fit with that.

Isn't Al supposed to be short for alcoholic, and the Betty referred to in the song is the Betty Ford Clinic ?
