A bit of an obvious choice maybe, but my favourite is Dave Brubeck's 'Take Five'.
Not a song but my favorite artist at the moment is: Silje Negaard
Relaxin' At Camarillo or Now's the Time - Charlie Parker
It's not a 'song' as such - it's instrumental, but 'Nuages' by Django Reinhardt gets my vote.
Have you ever seen "The Commitments"? The point when the saxophone player is having a pee? Jazz is musical masturbation, very little discipline or form usually just egos clashing, and everyone atonally soloing away....There are very few good jazz songs but I suppose if pushed I'd go for Billie Holiday's Summertime.
So What by Miles Davis or TheSidewinder by Lee Morgan: obvious, I know, (and shows that I haven't listened to any new jazz for 40 years) but there's a reason why great music is recognised as great music: it is great!
mine is Louis Armstrong doing "when it's sleepy time down south" and my second would be Clarence Williams "sugar foot stomp" followed thirdly by Clarence Williams "Candy Lips"
Dear SFT 42 , your interpretation pof JAZZ needs mending . I will agree that third stream , atonal jazz may fit your description,BUT if you were to listen to some of the many jazz groups of the past , whose music is as valid today as ever ie;BRUBECK__ MJQ__BILL EVANS== BIRD__ PETERSON__and dozens more , the music they play is a very structured thing
