The only lyrics I can remember are 'I'll sell you the sun..' the something about stars? I'm not sure.

Sounds like it could be Neil Diamond's If You Go Away. Terry Jacks released a cover of this which was a minor hit in the 70's.

I know it said "I'll sell you the sun" as I had my phone on me so that is what i remembereeedd of the song and wrote it down!
