i own an ipod nano(2GB). and it dosen't work. when i plug it in the computer to charge it first an apple sign then just for a mili second it shows contents and then the entire screen is convered with the words DO NOT DISCONNECT. and then absolutly nothing happens. when i unplug it it turns off it nothing happens not that anything happens while its charging or after the charging is over. what should i do. do i need itunes? can't anything be done without it.

Well, you certainly need some software, but it doesn't have to be itunes. Have a look at this:

Agreeing with Rojash, iTunes is by far the easiest way to use an iPod with your computer. All the others are reverse-engineering the iPod software, which may have flaws.
