Does anyone know roughy how many vinyl records you had to sell in the 1960s to get a number 1 single?

Probably about the same as the average no1 sells now (40-100,000 in a week) interestingly enough, despite frequent claims to the contrary. It's a common myth that you had to sell vast amounts to reach number one in the sixties but only small amounts now - though its true that if you take number ones out of the equation, sales are badly down.
