Is the title of their final album pronounced Closer (as in 'nearer')? Or is it Closer (as in 'closing number' - i.e. the final album)? It's bothered me for decades.

At the time it came out (1980) I do remember reading or hearing that it was a hard "s" as in closing.
Wow I've never really thought about that and always assumed it was Closer in the sense of proximity
A big Joy Division friend of mine has always pronounced it, as in your first example.
Also I think given much of the stuff on it,(is it the Eternal which appears to be about a funeral?), and IC's imminent suicide,Closer - as in is bringing something to a close - seems to fit, dunnit?
I've always gone for option 1 m'self. Decades: I see what you did there. ;-)
Always thought it was Closer as in nearer to, myself, and have never heard anyone refer to it as 'Clozer'. That includes vids/interviews of band members, John Peel and Tony Wilson etc !

I'd go for option 1 also, either way it's still a great album
