And he only played on a very few of the Beatles hits as George Martin didn't think he was good enough, so used a session drummer.

What a total load of rubbish.

Pete Best was the original Beatles drummer, and he had been with the band for a couple of years, playing in the Cavern and in Hamburg.

When they eventually got their recording contract the producer George Martin thought Pete Best was not a very good drummer and hired session drummer Alan White to join the session.

Alan White played on the first Beatles single Love Me Do.

As soon as the other Beatles realised Pete Best was not good enough they sacked him from the band and brought in Ringo Starr who they had seen play with Rory Storm in the past.

Ringo then played drums on all the rest of their songs, and a very good drummer he is too.

I recently went to see a Beatles tribute band and they played all their early hits, including Ringo's drum parts, and you realise how important Ringo's drumming was to the Beatles songs.

I have always felt Pete Best was such an unlucky man, to be thrown out the band just before their success.
This backs up what I have said above

Is that the same alan white that played in Marmalade? (I think it was)

VGH,
Are you a drummer by any chance to say hes a very good drummer.
>Are you a drummer by any chance to say hes a very

I did not say he was a GREAT drummer, Tony Williams and Art Blakey are great drummers.

But in a POP context he is a good drummer, doing just the right thing behind each song.

It was only when I saw this tribute band did I realise how Ringo's infills are so much a part of the songs.

Alan White certainly played in the band "Yes".

Not sure about other bands he played in.
As a writer for 'Drummer' magazine, I have interviewed dozens of top-flight drummers and when Ringo is discussed, they all agree that he is not only an excellent player, but that his style and contribution to The Beatles is under-rated.

Listen to the single / double kick and paradiddle Ringo plays on 'What You're Doing' - innovative at the time, much copied since.

He may not even now be able to play a drum roll, but his history and his place in drummers' influences is certainly assured.
