In 1969 they were having internal arguments and were getting involved in their own projects.
Early in 1969 Paul had the idea of getting them all to sit in studio together for a few days and just "jam" like they used to in the early days, and to film it happening.
But it was all a bit of a mess, and the songs were not that great, and they spent a lot of time arguing, so the project was just left on the shelf.
Then George Martin (producer) got them together and said "lets make an album like the old days" so between February and August they recorded Abbey Road and it was released September 1969.
Then Phil Spector (producer) was given the tapes for Let it Be and was asked to put an album together. None of the Beatles were that bothered about it, so he was left to do what he liked.
So the Let It Be album was released in May 1970, and a film of the same name was also released of the footage shot during the jam session.
Both the film and album were badly received, and it was a sad ending to a wonderful career for the band.
The Let it Be album was re-released in 2003 called "Let it be Naked" where most of Phil Spectors "added" production was removed.
Phil Spector has since been given a life sentence for murder (he was always a bit strange).

I should clarify this.
There are some good songs on the album (Let it be, Long and winding Road, Get Back, Across the Universe etc), though perhaps not as many good songs as other Beatles albums.
But most pop albums consist of numerous overdubs and so on that give them a broader sound, but these tracks, because they were recorded by the band jamming, sound rather raw and under-recorded.
If they had been recorded in the "normal" Beatles style they may have sounded better.
The other problem is that the band members were all keeping their better songs for their upcoming solo albums after the band split.
