If I recall correctly, even Mark Lamarr said he didn't have a clue who it was and asked that if anyone knew, would they let him know the details.

I might be 'barking up the wrong tree' here, but Brian Jones played sitar on the Stones' Paint It Black.

I didn't hear it but it sounds like it could be the work of Lord Sitar.

His eponymous album certainly had sitar reworkings of numerous 60's rock tracks on it including some Beatles numbers and The Who's I Can See For Miles. I'm afraid I haven't got the album to hand but I'll check later and let you know.
