I doubt if anybody really cares what Elton John thinks. Who is he to make such statements? I can't stand Elton John and his high opinion of himself. (Don't like his music either!)

From the point of view of the "God Squad" ... what is worse? Saying Jesus was gay? Or saying that he never existed?

I thought Jesus did exist redhelen.......I think the argument is whether or not he was the Messiah, the fact that a prophet called Jesus did exist was quite widely accepted.

He probably existed, since the alternative - that people somehow conspired to invent him - is much less plausible. The Bible does not say he was married, which leaves his sex life if any open to speculation; but then it scarcely mentions his siblings either, so perhaps that just wasn't interesting to the writers of the gospels. The life of an itinerant preacher may not have left time for a youngish man to settle down (especially one who thought the end of the world was nigh).

Elton is not the first to have suggested Jesus was gay so I doubt this will cause a storm. However, there's no evidence to suggest he was, just as there's no evidence to suggest he wasn't married. Contrary to popular belief there were many women in his entourage. Some texts suggest that Mary Magdalene was Jesus' greatest confidant, and the Gospel of Philip says that he kissed her often.
