i recently upgraded and increased my ram to 1 gig from 512 hoping to get 1.5 gig.. problem is my pc wont recognise the two ram cards side by side in the two slots i have in the time pc i have. it will recognise 1 or the other in each slot individually but not both together. when i boot up with the two cards it just goes in a loop asking for safe mode, last best working mode blah blah, you know the drill.lol . the ram is ddr 2 i believe and i ran the crucial upgrade program to check everything would work ok. am i missing sommat? do i have to go into bios to ensure the memory is recognised? or do i just have a dodgy motherboard? as someone has already suggested. its running XP V2002 sp3. AMD athlon 2400 2 GHz 992 RAM.( the new card i got). can any one help or offer suggestions? i would really appeciate it, Ta Muchly :)

Some motherboards will only work with RAM in matched pairs - I presume you've got a 1 and a .5 - did you follow the Crucial recommendations to the letter?

Open the case, get the details from Mobo. Check online for exactly what it supports in memory. Dependant sometimes on the speed of the memory, as well as the actual size. So you "may" be able to have twice the memory, but a lower speed will be all that is supported.

The ram has to be matched to work.

So long as you earthed yourself whilst installing, to avoid zapping the chips with static, then I think your next best bet might be to remove the original 0.5G, put it in an anti-staic bag. Then ensure the new boards are installed in the RIGHT locations to be found, and get it running with that first. Once you have done that you can think about trying to get the additional 0.5 G installed as well. Sort one problem at a time.

thanks for your replies. yes i did earth myself. there is only two RAM slots and the crucial upgrade program said the new ram was compatable, i followed the instalation instuctions as set out. perhaps it is just a dodgy motherboard after all.Thanks again folks

OK, one last thing to try, which I expect you've already tried. Take them back out and put them back in again to ensure there is a good connection. I have known it that one or more boards not click all the way in. If there are clips at each end they should have moved over the top of the RAM boards
