As Snags indicates, your budget is an important factor. For example, if price is no limit, you'd find it hard to beat the Shure SE530 (which seems to be universally well-reviewed):

For a more realistic budget (but still far from cheap) the Klipsch Image S4 gets widely praised:

Any of the Sennheiser range will also do a great job (but expect to pay big money).

Indeed, but see again the title of the thread and the original post..

For £40 still stick with Sennheiser but look further down their range. It also depends what you've currently been listening with: if you've been using those sh1tty white things from Apple then Sennnheiser's CX300 IIs will be a great improvement.

Getting a correct fit is also important. £150 headphones will sound awful if you don't choose the correct size earbuds for your ear.

homedeeth. You can get the CX300 IIs cheaper than that Amazon price on ebay. Just make sure you buy genuine as there are many clone/Chinese versions floating about.

I can't get on with them, they drop out of my lug 'oles. I'd have custom-made ones if I had the money. I'm happy with my Sennheiser PX100s.

And the upgraded model: the PX100 IIs are even better. A shame they don't come with the hard case that the originals did.
