That old song makes perfect sense to me and I don't know why it has gone down in history as one of the 'ultimate' nonsense songs.
Let's break it down (said in a high pitched American lab-tech voice):
Mares eat oats (true, as well as grass, hay and other fodder)
...and does eat oats (they probably would if they wondered into an oat field)
...and little lambs eat ivy (not sure about that - further research will take place)
A kid'll eat ivy too (well if the digestive system of a lamb can cope with it I imagine a ruminant as closely related also could)
...wouldn't you ? (Actually, it does break down at this point, ivy being poisonous to humans, then again maybe there is a dark message about poisoning in the song).
