All this bluster from the Tory Government about the robbery of the People's Game is so hypocritical.

They have been robbing [and will continue to rob] the People of their Transport system, their Postal service, their Public Utilities, their Health Service to gift them to their Cronies, putting Profit before People. But when a few Football Clubs take the same approach they burst fourth with sanctimonious outrage. And why ? Obviously a vote catcher for the May Elections. What a shower.

i don't really understand why the govt is poking it's nose in. Football is not nationalised or subsidised, it's a profit making business.
Ultimately the fans will decide either by not going to matches or not watching, or going to matches and watching

ordinarily I would agree that politics and sport don't mix but this is such an assault on the national game, that I think in this case the sport and government should work together to stop this disaster. Apart from the protagonists I have yet to find anyone who thinks it's a good idea. From Prince William to Becks it's been roundly condemned.

If this,as proposed,is a midweek league then given that Premier League games are now played every day of the week,what’s the problem?Most of those in the middle third of the Premier League don’t have the structure or players to mount a serious European challenge anyway.

I don’t agree with the OP, but there is a hint of hypocrisy not just from the Government, but the rest of the football establishment.
The breakaway Super League is a direct consequence of the ownership of those teams being foreign owned. Governments of Labour, Conservatives and the LibDem Coalition have allowed our heritage to be sold to the highest bidder for many years. The Clubs are now global brands and an investment and not a local cultural entity.

The FA, UEFA, Premier League and SKY have all been complicit in robbing the public of their game, and they are only upset now because they see their fiefdom being taken from them. They are not bothered about fans they are bothered about losing the money.

Canary am a socialist at heart like you but am not sure what you want here. Would you prefer the goverment to say nothing or prefer them to support the proposals. Lets face it you'd of had a go whatever they did or did'nt say on this

It's our national sport, it would be a travesty if the government didn't get involved.
As for it being a vote catcher, I can't see all the fans of the relevant clubs getting together and voting for or against a single party over this.

Boris wants to align himself with the "common people". He sees it as a vote winner. He needs to be careful. Many people don't give a stuff about football and are probably taking a quiet delight in seeing it finally eating itself. For the PM deflect his attention from Covid and a shedful of other issues to address football may not do him many favours in the eyes of the silent majority.
