The Labour Party really needs a leader with a bit of steel through their soul and a fire in their bellies.Attlee had it,Wilson had it,John Smith had it.The early death of John Smith is one of the biggest tragedies ever to have happened to the British people and the whole world,i would say.We got Blair instead.Does God really hate us Brits.She hasnt done us any favours the last 30 years.

I don’t agree about John Smith.
He was a nice man and his death was a tragedy in a human level but he’d never have had the ability it indeed the will to knock labour into shape the way Blair did

I agree with Ich, Smithy had his talents but he'd never have got into No10 and if you can't do that then none of the other stuff matters. He would never have coralled old labour the way Blair did, he was still droning on about income tax rises for gawd sake.

I agree with Ynna about the tragedy of Smith's death, because when he died, MY Labour party also passed into history.

Would he have become PM had he lived? Probably, as Major was so unpopular. Would he have been a successful PM? We can only speculate, but I'm sure he wouldn't have become a war criminal.
