Child Tax Credits are for people who are working not for people on the dole or getting income support. It affects how much tax you pay.

Joy - it was only brought in a few years ago, it was give some encouragement for people who was not on big bucks. Nothing at all to do with receiving benefit as has been highlighted on here.
Oh I see now DEN...
Child tax credits are paid to people who are also on the 'dole' or are claiming JSA.

Working tax credits are paid to top up lower income earners.
Actually that's not strictly true Den, as if you get DLA and some other benefits and have children you get child tax credits, and in any event it's a leg up for those on a low income so is a form of benefit and not solely for those working.

Exactly Ummm
my apologies, I didn't realise that.
I also think it's a great system. They help with up to 70% of child care costs and make it more profitable for parents to go back to work. Which is a god send for single parents.
I absolutely agree, aything that helps people fulfil their potential has got to be a good thing and chil;d Tax credits is a perfect example. i'd actually like to see it go far further and have state run creche's in every town and city to enable people particularly single parents to either work for someone else or for themselves as childcare must be a total nightmare if you're on a low income.
it certainly must NOX, the majority of people now taking kids to Primary, are Grandparents or at least here, it is
Agree NOX - I think it's a long term plan. The old system single parents were better off on benefits. Then when their child/ren left full time education they couldn't back into work because they'd been off work for so long.

fender..i havent missed any point at all - but i think actually you have...

the point being that however safe those other countries they pass through are - they stand to benefit from a whole new life if they continue on to the uk...because these countries offer nothing more than safety

any normal human being would do exactly that...go to the best place they can find , not just one 'that will do'... i know i would...and if i was them i would not care one jot about british citizens getting upset about it...

if you had lived in appaling conditions and someone offered you a way out of it - wouldnt you take it?
or would you refuse it and say ..."ooh no i cant accept your offer, dont give me security safety and better life - because some people might not like it!...no leave me here to suffer...because thats fair..." - no you wouldn't, you'd grab it with both hands....

my point is that the immigrants themselves are not to blame - they are just trying to get a good life for themselves and their families... if this goverment is too incompetent to control and monitor the situation, and seems unaware that their plans are massivley flawed and will cause nothing but trouble...then thats the governments fault...
joko, very well put too but don't you think under European law, all Eurpoean countries shoud be seen to take in an equal quota, France and Italy are totally oppsed to taking in immigrants,,,Why?
Because they are notoriously xenophobic Bobbi- the disgraceful way that Italy is treating the Roma and Sinti peoples is possibly the greatest human rights outrage in modern Europe.
and yet nothing is done?????
not sure of the relevance to my post bobbi, but yes absolutely they should be.
as nox said, one of the reasons is xenophobia, but another is very likely they have seen the mess the uk has made of it and probably just cant be bothered to get involved.

the issue is probably not about which country will accept them its about which is the best country...

the fact is no, asylum seekers are in this country for asylum...they pass through numerous places of safety - they dont settle there becasue they know they can get more here....
which goes back to what I posted earlier, we are a tiny country in a bit of a mess financially, can we afford to keep taking more immigrants?

No - but we need to do something about it, and I don't know what we can do. It's policy which needs to change, and kowtowing to Brussels on Human Rights. But there is no point in - as said - keep coming on here banging on about it - write to your MP - etc. Start a petition on the Downing Street site. This is what we are like on so many things which rile us - we moan like hell about The System but few of us rarely do anything about it ourselves.
