I realise this was a brutal and savage attack on two females, and that women should feel free to camp out on their holidays, or on any other occasion.

But were these two foolish to the extreme, to camp out on a deserted beach in a foreign land alone?

If nothing had happened then they would be regarded as responsible acts, as it turned out disaster struck on both occasions making them irresponsible.

The media only report on the consequences of anyone's behaviour if the result is in some way negative.

Had the ladies' studies gone a long way towards finding a cure for cancer, it is unlikely they would have received anything like the level of coverage - or indeed debate - that their dreadful ordeal has creeated.

I've been to hotels in Jamaica/Granda/Barbados & all had armed security men patrolling the beach. Their reason was "pirates" attacking at night.

Yes, the were irresponsible although their irresponsibility was probably caused by naivety. I don`t know if the organisation they were working on behalf of tried to strongly disuade them from camping there but if they didn`t then they have failed in their duty of care as well and should take some responsibility.
It`s not very safe to camp in remote places in developing countries and there have been a few murders of foreigners in the Caribbean lately.

It doesn`t matter what they were studying. It was still irresponsible. If it had been a couple or even two men they would probably still have been attacked (although probably a different kind of attack)

It certainly seems that their behaviour was foolhardy taking into consideration their geographic whereabouts and also the fact that they deemed it necessary to carry machetes for self defence.

St Lucia is a holiday island, tourism is probably its main source of income. I would of thought that many people have camped, slept, skinny dipped etc on the beaches, also I would have thought they would have been warned by the locals and police if there was any undercurrent of violence.

They were adults and as such I cannot see why they should be criticised for either thier deportment or thier sex.

That is obvious Andy, but when I made my analogy, I assumed that others would realise that the animals where not actually in their cages at the time the students entered the cage, but entered afterwards.

But at the time I made it, it would have took too much explaining just as it is now doing, best to make it simple, then for others either to criticise it or take it as read.
