12 hours in custody? Not nice but not exactly a living hell (the case doesn't appear to have gone to court). What she's being punished for isn't so much accusing a cabbie as messing around with the justice system; what she's done will make life harder for real rape victims. A year would be nice but I suppose she'll be out by Tuesday.
jno do you think it is just 12 hours, for starters they had taken his car which he needs for work for tests and believe me they will have had that for more than 12 hours.

A teenage girl from the Bolton area who lied about being raped by a taxi driver has been sentenced.
The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted perverting the course of justice.
At Bolton Crown Court, she was sentenced to 12 months in a young offenders institution.
The court heard that early on January 8, a 34-year-old taxi driver picked up the girl from a taxi rank in Farnworth after she had been returned by a colleague who suspected she would not pay her fare.
He took the girl to her home in the Bolton area and, when she admitted having no cash, agreed to retain her ring at the taxi base until the next day when the fare could be paid.
The girl returned home and told her mother she had been raped by the taxi driver.
Police were called and an investigation was launched.
The man was arrested and his car seized for forensic examination. CCTV footage from the taxi base was recovered and witness statements taken from the man's colleagues.
He was interviewed several times and spent 12 hours in police custody before being released on bail.
The girl was taken to hospital and had several appointments made for her to see a doctor and councillor at St Mary's specialist centre in Manchester.

An accusation of rape can totally ruin the life of a man who is innocent.
Rape is such a horrendous crime and people of both sexes are horrified by it happening to them or one of their family. I personally feel that any attacker should be sent to prison for much longer than the law currently allows.
So to accuse a man of such a crime either out of malice or because you got drunk and woke up next morning with a stranger is a dispicable thing to do and the woman (or man) should be punished.
I think that repeat offenders (rapists) should be castrated - painfully.

Whickerman, it's not clear (until he tells his story to the tabloids, anyway) what harm, if any, came to the guy beyond interviews and a night in custody. His name isn't given in the report so it's possible nobody even knew about it. Maybe I'm misinformed here; but in the meantime I'm prepared to assume the court weighed this up before passing sentence. I'm not defending the girl or her actions; but I don't feel inclined to put her behind bars forever.

That's true - it's a mystery - he's probably having a good laugh about it down the pub with his mates for all we know. but if someone ever falsely accuses you of rape, please report back here about how you feel because it will give u sall a bit more insight into it.
