Late news from Scotland

Apologies for the lateness of this, but it has only just come to my attention, courtesy of John Julius Norwich. It comes from the Edinburgh Evening News in 1978.

'While they were waiting at a bus stop in Cler-
miston, Mr and Mrs Daniel Thirsty were
threatened by Mr Robert Clear. 'He demand-
ed that I give him my wife's purse,' said Mr
Thirsty. 'Telling him that the purse was in her
basket, I bent down, put my hands up her
skirt, detached her artificial leg and hit him
over the head with it. It was not my intention
to do anything more than frighten him off, but
unhappily for us all, he died.'

That is superb - hope it's real and that being back in a more common-sense era he didn't face any charges!

I was in Edinburgh at that time but I don't remember that. Must have been drunk.

Those Scots will do anything to hang on to their money. Leaving Mrs Thirsty balancing on one leg until the trial was over was a bit much.

That's a good point Gran. The police would have taken the leg into custody. I hope Mrs T had a spare.
