I think a lot of the problems started when the Yardies came in from Jamaica & started fuelling the young black kids to join gangs etc. It should have been tackled then before it got a hold in this country, I live near to Birmingham & remember well when those two beautiful young West Indian girls had their lives cut short, the gangs should have been sorted there & then,I don't know why but instead they have been allowed to grow & flourish.

I saw this debate on Newsnight. I felt a bit sorry for David Starkey. He is plainly a very intelligent man (of course he is) and I have a modicum of sympathy for his point of view. He is, however, quite simply, wrong. In the civilised, if heated debate which arose his argument was shown to be fallacious, even if some of the objections to it by his co-debaters were unfairly accusing him of racism.
ron, there were loads of street gangs in london & uk during the 20th century, including the yiddishers, hoxton mob, watney streeters, aldgate mob, whitechapel mob, bethnal green mob and the organised italian mob. in fact there is documented history of street gangs in the uk that goes back to the 17th c, you aint that od are you?!
so gangland britain was thriving long before the influx of yardies.

well I blame Londoners.. as we all know the riots started in London and I'm pretty certain at least 99% of the rioters and looters were locals, AOG rightfully says there's a lot of gang crime in inner city London, it's no coinicidence.. it's clear.. people from London are all thugs, lotters and murderers!!
well I don't trust you anyway Ankou, because I know now that you're one of that lot!!
The tendency towards violence is very much more linked towards environmental characteristics as opposed to biological.. so if people can suggest that people can be predisposed towards violence as a result of having darker skin, then I'm more likely to be right to suggest that people from London have a predisposition towards violence and thieving!!
I'd start to doubt yourself Ankou!!

em, that's exactly the point I'm making! It was all completely tongue in cheek the blaming of Londoners but I think you can now see my point.
Many of the rioters were indeed black, young, out of work and from London, so why are people only pinning the causing factor flag on a select number of those characteristics?

pa ul, i think you will find, just like everywhere in Britain, the majority, please note, are law abiding citizens, though one arse who lobbed bricks at the police turns out to be an Oxford law graduate, he has a Masters Degree from LSE, according to the report he was on the way home from a job interview, with the London Civic Forum.
