What has it got to do with the likes of Vanessa Redgrave, would she like them bordering on her land?

Thanks Emu - I knew I would probably come under attack for it but there are two sides to every story afaic, especially if it's a minority that can fall prey to stereotypes and generalisations. I also accept some of the comments people have made and I have also seen the mess that *some* travellers have left in their wake ...but I despise intolerance (is that an oxymoron?) and sweeping generalisations.
Hi Halifax, I just read the link to the Dailymail news story...I see your point they should apply for planning permission and they are flouting the law.
However it is their home for the last 10 years and mediation rather than eviction might work...
I just thought there was a lot or generalized and derogatory comments made on this thread

ditto answerprancer ;)
It`s a no win situation, move them on and they`ll make some other town or villagers lives a living nightmare, let them stay and it`s a message to all pikeys to set up site anywhere they want to.

If they are forced to moved on won`t the council lose out on all that council tax they are paying? ;oP
i don't have a problem with people who are not indiginous brits (what are indiginous brits anyway?)

but i'm sorry, they bought the land, knowing it was green belt, they did not apply for planning permission, they should not have 80+ permanent caravans there, it's not about their background or heritage, it's about planning boring regs!
Not I Trim, but I still believe in 'innocent until proven guilty' and I bet most of the dribbling rabid "filthy dirty dog killing, forest sh!tting, sanitary towel festooning" hatevocates haven't either.
My friend owns a farm near Colchester, and some travellers camped on the field next to her land a couple of months ago. They came onto her land and started cutting branches off her trees with a chain saw, and when she challenged them they threatened her and said they would cut her throat and all her animals, so she called the police - who promptly confiscated her shotgun licence and guns! Her and other landowners get no support from the police, and they are worried that when they are evicted they will end up having them on their land as they will have nowhere else to go. I say let them stay where they are, give them planning permission for the sites already occupied but put a limit on any more building or caravans.

i'm sorry, and i know it's boring, but we live in a civilised society, with civilised rules, and, if you don't want to live by those rules, you need to go to another country that will accept you...it's not racism, it's civilisation
"pikeys". Good God!
I agree that they should conform to the law, I'm not disagreeing with that, I'm speaking out against the general prejudice against the travelling community in this thread (as seen in the adjective above...just look up the definition, it's appalling)
Would ppl be justified here to use a racist term for a black person???
Ap! I don't think that's an oxymoron...maybe if you had said you tolerate intolerance!...which you don't and thank God for that!
I think the bottom line of this is that mainland Britain is no longer a place for nomadic types because it has become too highly populated, and people who want to live more 'alternative' lifestyles are also rejected because societal 'norms' in this country have become more an more stylised and intolerant.

Hate and intolerance has become a massive 'bandwagon' right now, everyone is on it (and I include myself in this - no one is innocent) any excuse to vent spleen and blame anything on one 'subculture' or some other scapegoat is fair game.
AP - that's all well and politically correct, but all us sad fookers have to pay our council tax to our local councils, who have to pay for these 'travellers'...

if they want to live outside society's rules, they shouldn't expect society's advantages - but they do!!!
if you want to live in a civilised society, you've got to be prepared to pay the price = income tax, council tax = it's what separates us from animals = the need to look after others...?
Animals?
yes, emu...animals - they can't talk...???
What are you talking about???
Animals can't talk? Right.
I think you were referring to people who don't pay their taxes are "animals".
emu - you have taken my comment totally out of context - i think everyone in a civilised society should pay towards the upkeep of that society

That doesn't mean that i think people who don't are animals!

you have totally mis-interpreted what i said!

if what you say is true, i am an "animal"

lol :)))
Well I'm a bird that can't fly!!..so I'm sorry for misinterpreting you :)))
Hi Halifaxmum:
//AP - that's all well and politically correct, "politically correct"//
This is your interpretation, not mine.

//...but all us sad fookers have to pay our council tax to our local councils, who have to pay for these 'travellers'...//
That includes me, I also pay my council tax- why separate yourself from me in this way ?

//if they want to live outside society's rules, they shouldn't expect society's advantages - but they do!!!//
Do they ? What makes you an authority on this ?
