Perhaps 1 in 3 people on AB Shop at Tesco's!!  I Feel Sorry For the Farmers,But if you want good quality Veg,Get it at one of the many Farmers markets.Or shops that sell local produce.Tesco's are big but what a choice they offer!!A litre of Extra Virgin olive oil for less than �3 quid.Cheaper petrol than most places.The place was packed this morning,I dont think thats going to change!!

Good luck to them I say. I do feel sorry for the smaller stores but they are a business and the main objective of any business is to make money. Clearly Tesco have done their homework and no how to keep the customers coming back.

They seem to be in a no win situation.if they don't give peole what they want, then no one will shop there and if they do then they are too big for their boots and profiteering!!

Tescos are just offering to people with very busy lives, whether that's through work, family or both, what they want. In an ideal world, I would do my shopping in the little independent grocers and butchers and support local producers and retailers.  The reality is, like most  women today, I work full time and do not wish to spend my precious weekends and evenings traipsing around town buying groceries so a quick half hour sprint round the supermarket in my lunch hour is all I have time for. 20/ 30 years ago (I'm thinking back to when I was a small child and my mum did not have to go to work like so many mothers have to today just to make ends meet), things were different and women, typically, either did not work or did not work full time, so they had more time to devote to shopping. Times have changed and so our shopping habits have too, but although I've never really supported the small independent retailer, I do think it's a shame if their livelihoods are lost to the large corporate retailers and if farmers' profits are being squeezed dry.

The main objective of any government is to serve its people, and if a large chain of supermarkets is pulling in profits of �2Billion (�2 Billion!) then the government has simply not done enough to encourage competition. �2B is simply too much.

Watched the tonight program on Monday at 19.30 on ITV, Trevor McDonald was talking about price Illusion, say the price this week for a can of Beans is 20p next week it goes up to 50p then the week after they put it down to 25p
Saying you save 25 pence, half price in reality the tin of 20p beans went up 5p.this is called the three week Scam. Anyone else see the same program?

 I also buy my petrol at Tesco cheapest around! And buy veg and free range eggs at a local farm shop. I think like most things in life there are good and bad things about Tesco.

As someone who finds eating and food a real pleasure, I really feel more has to be done to support local retailers.  Mainly this is for my own selfish means - I like being able to eat delicious food and in my experience the supermarkets just do not compare in the range, quality or availability of artisan foods like traditionally made bread, cheese, meats etc.  As fewer and fewer independents survive (I live in Dundee but have no access to a local deli or even a decent greengrocer although there are 4 Tesco supermarkets within a 10 minute drive),  the supermarkets are branching out into so called "luxury" ranges and deli-type foods.  However, I just do not compare the packets of, for example, parma ham one can buy in tesco - factory packed, sweaty and overpriced - with the stuff sliced in a deli, sweet and delicious and served by a person who knows about and loves food and can offer a wealth of recipe ideas and combinations.

I think that is where the problem lies for smaller retailers. These days fewer people have the time and/or inclination to go to independent retailers, have the extra money and need something more convenient which is something Tesco offers. As you say, there are 4 within a 10 minute drive where you live which means anybody could pop in to any one of them on the way home from work or indeed in the middle of the night if they want to and get everything they need, quickly at a reasonable cost.

�2 billion sounds a lot, but it's only a smal % of the actual money outlayed in the first place. I think they spent �40 billion. So, a 5% return. I'd say that was fair.

I like Tesco they are open all night are telly blew up when we was watching a film in the night. we went out to Tesco and got a new one I wish they would open up some pubs I have a taliqua and some of that cheap virgin olive oil and a roast chicken .

wow, a 5 percent return for a big company is ENORMOUS. It's not even a tech!

Something has gone wrong in the competition structure. How can a company manage to knock up �2B? It must have been all those 'Finest' dinners I bought over the years.

And no, I don't have a ****ing club card!

Maybe Tesco should be asked to manage MG Rover for a couple of years - in lieu of Corporation Tax - and see if they can turn them round

Tesco only ever has about half of what I go in there for and their customer service absolutely sucks.

Yes they are cheaper and convenient (times) - but I've had enough and am off to Asda

Theres obviously the debate concerning whether or not tesco are responsible for putting smaller retailers out of business but how about the amount of people they employ!
