For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I don't think the legal stance of ITV/Syco should be affected as he admitted that he had been previous convictions and obviously stated what they were, I don't think it matters to them the gender of the victim.
That said, in my opinion a man attcking a woman is far worse than a man attacking a man, not a very PC stance I know but my morals aren't dictated by what's PC. Assaulting a woman and, judging by the pictures, a very slight woman, is absolutely cowardly. Then lying about it all on national TV to make out he was the victim is pathetic. The lads a piece of krappe, a very lucky one though!!
