In my lower school I remember a boy being caned in front of the whole class. That's not punishment...that's humiliation.

The point of my thread was not to debate corporal punishment, for Christ's sake we have heard all the arguments for and against ad finitum, but to illustrate the surprise of the number of people who were in favour of the return of corporal punishment in that particular survey.

One had always got the impression from AB threads previously that the pro corporal punishment lobby were in the minority......seems not.

It's never going to happen that the regulations will get so lax that you have a Jimmy Edwards scenario nowadays - so imho no child is going to get legitimatly beaten (and quite rightly so) but I do think that children need to be taught respect - it's very difficult for parents to implement this with the 'little delights' being very aware of their human rights. I stand by ' a sharp slap on the bum did no one any harm'
Sorry ummmmm - don't see the connection (or disconnection) with 'we can speak' -- there has been a lot of communication and nothing happens.
Agree with mamalynne - the same suspects - but think the queue would be longer now.
I do believe though, that corporal punishment in schools is a very different beast to a clout around the ear at home and needs to be regulated.

Yes ..just how far would they go if given carte blanche to use a cane on children .


They certainly punished bad sewing back in the year dot when I was at school
I was regularly belted hard across the knuckles with a metal ruler by a teacher just because I couldn't tack in a straight line ..But I daresay she got a thrill out of it .Vicious old crow.
I regularly dodged the sadist who hurled the blackboard rubber at me just because I couldn't grasp algebra .
All this vilolence taught me nothing .I still can't sew for toffee and algebra is still a mystery
I really don't see what corporal punishment achieves .

Thing is, the parents of the lawbreakers won't be the ones demanding corporal punishment. They'll be the ones seeking compensation for their kids being traumatised at school.

sorry ummmm - got waylaid with visitors - take your point but do you think this works? - I have to say I don't -know many parents who are absolutely exasperated by their kids cos no matter what they say, the kids just ignore them so I still can't see a smack on the bum is that terrible. But I fear it's too late, the ground rules haven't been put in place. Again - I don't advocate any sort of beatings for children but I do believe in strict foundations for acceptable behaviour.

When do you stop smacking them on the bum though? I have smacked my kids in the past. Luckily, they don't remember it. What do I do with my 15 year old son though? He's a bit old to be smacked....

Don't get me wrong...he knows there is a line that will never be crossed without serious consequences. Day to day though, smacking doesn't work.
